The climate, town by town

The Costa del Sol counts over 300 days of sunshine, but the weather is not the same everywhere. Some areas sit lower, others higher. Certain valleys trap heat and create hot pockets, while a breeze sweeps the next one clean. Marbella is sheltered by La Concha, Estepona catches more Atlantic air, and by the time you reach Nerja the water is noticeably warmer in summer. That is why this page gives you the forecast per town instead of one number for the whole coast.

Costa del Sol weather through the year

Typical values for the coast around Málaga. Summers are hot, dry and rain-free for weeks, winters are mild enough for lunch outside, and almost all the rain lands between November and March.

When can you swim?

The sea is warmest from late June to September, peaking around 24° in August, and Nerja's water runs a degree or two warmer than Sotogrande's. In winter it drops to around 15 or 16°, which is wetsuit territory for most people, my Scandinavian friends excepted. You will still see swimmers on New Year's Day.

How hot does summer really get?

On the coast, most July and August days sit around 30 to 32° and the sea breeze does real work. The exception is the terral, a dry inland wind that can push Málaga past 40° for a day or two. Much of the Costa del Sol is protected from it by the mountain range behind us.

When does it rain?

Between November and March, and often all at once: a week of downpours, then blue sky again. From June to September rain is rare enough that a single shower makes conversation. Rain during Semana Santa is basically a given.
