The week in street markets

Every market on the coast, on the day it happens, west to east. Days come from each town hall's own pages.

TODAY

Most markets sell a mix: fruit and vegetables, clothes, shoes, bags and household things. The tags tell the rest: BIG ONE marks a whole-morning market, and second-hand, organic and artisan markets carry their own tag. The biggest come first in each day's list. Mornings until about 14:00, then they pack up fast. Markets marked * run summer evenings only. Cash is easiest, though many stalls now take card. Go early for the best fruit and the easiest parking. Days can move on local holidays.

Street Markets of the Costa del Sol The guide is being written. It will live right here.

What a mercadillo is

Almost every town on the coast holds a mercadillo: an open-air street market, one morning a week, always in the same place. Stalls go up at sunrise and come down after lunch. It is where locals buy fruit for the week, where neighbours meet, and where you hear four languages in one queue. Entry is free and the first hour is the best hour.

What the stalls sell

The big markets are half food, half everything else: fruit and vegetables, olives and spices, clothes, shoes, bags, leather, ceramics, plants and kitchen tools. The rastros are different: second-hand stalls with furniture, tools, vinyl, books and real finds if you come early. On this page they carry the second-hand tag. The biggest variety markets on the coast are Fuengirola on Tuesday, San Pedro on Thursday, and Nueva Andalucía and La Cala de Mijas on Saturday.

Parking at the markets

Markets held on a fairground, like Fuengirola, Marbella, La Cala de Mijas and Torremolinos, usually have open ground to park on, but it fills by mid-morning. Markets on town streets, like Estepona and San Pedro, are harder: the streets around them close or fill early, so park at the edge and walk, or come before 10:00. The easiest visit anywhere is the first hour of the morning.

Town by town

Fuengirola. Tuesday brings one of the biggest markets in Andalucía, over 470 stalls at the fairground. On Saturday the same ground turns into a second-hand rastro with over 300 stalls, and on Sunday a smaller market runs at Calle Méndez Núñez. Coming by train saves the parking queue.

Estepona. The Wednesday market moved in 2025 to Calle Francia, next to the new Mercadona. Sunday has two: a market at the port and a second-hand rastro at the bullring.

Marbella. Monday at the Las Albarizas fairground, Thursday in San Pedro at Calle Jorge Guillén, Friday under the pines of Elviria, and Saturday in Nueva Andalucía opposite Puerto Banús.

Mijas. La Cala's fairground hosts markets twice a week, Wednesday and Saturday. Calypso runs Thursday and Las Lagunas Saturday.

Benalmádena. The main market is Friday at the Tívoli esplanade in Arroyo de la Miel, with a fruit and vegetable market the same day at La Paloma. Wednesday at La Paloma is the second-hand rastro.

Torremolinos. Thursday general market and Sunday rastro, both at the fairground on Avenida del Real.

Manilva and Casares. Manilva runs Monday in the pueblo at El Pozo del Rey, Friday on the Sabinillas seafront, and a Sunday rastro at the fairground. Casares pueblo holds its market on Friday.

Sotogrande and San Roque. Sunday is the day: the rastro at Sotogrande's marina and the town market in San Roque. Torreguadiaro runs its own market on Thursday, and on summer evenings the marina holds a night market.

Benahavís and Istán. Benahavís holds its market on Tuesday and an artisan market on Sunday. Istán's morning is Saturday.

Rincón de la Victoria. Wednesday at Camino Viejo de Vélez, and La Cala del Moral runs its own market on Friday. Both start at 08:00, earlier than most.

Torre del Mar and Vélez. Both markets fall on Thursday: Torre del Mar at Plaza de la Paz, Vélez town at Calle Alfredo Kraus.

Nerja. Tuesday at Paraje de Almijara, by the Almijara urbanisations, with public hours from 09:30. On Sunday the same ground hosts a second-hand rastro run by the local Lions Club.

Torrox. Monday at the Ferrara municipal car park in Torrox Costa, between Avenida Esperanto and Avenida Costa del Sol.

Málaga. The city's coast-facing markets are Huelin's, on Avenida de Europa every Wednesday and Saturday, and El Palo's small Saturday morning at Plaza Virgen de la Milagrosa.

Summer evenings. Four markets run after dark in summer: Sotogrande's marina, Estepona's Paseo Marítimo, the Sabinillas seafront and Benahavís' village street. On this page they carry a red star and their evening hours.
