The Alto Golf Club

⛳ 18 holes · par 71 Dave Thomas, remodelled by Manuel Piñero · 1998 Sotogrande

The old Almenara: Piñero remodelled the golf in 2021, and the 2025 relaunch added the Suzann Pettersen academy with its par-3 nine.

🛰️ The course from the sky

The Alto Golf Club is the former Almenara Golf, renamed in 2025. Dave Thomas designed the original 27 holes, opened in 1998, as three nine-hole loops in the pine woods at the top of Sotogrande, beside Los Alcornocales natural park. Manuel Piñero remodelled the golf in 2021. The main course now uses the old Lagos and Pinos nines: a par 71 of about 5,900 metres, tree-lined, with water in play and long views over Sotogrande to the sea. Holes 12 to 15 turn around a lake, and the 18th climbs back to the clubhouse. The third loop became an academy campus with a nine-hole par-3 course by Piñero and a school fronted by Suzann Pettersen, opened in summer 2025 with a Toptracer range. Tees are named after animals, from GOAT for low handicaps to DEER for beginners. It is the accessible course of the Sotogrande group, tied to the SO/ Sotogrande hotel. Weekday green fees start around 115 euros (2026); book on the club site.

Driving range

A new Toptracer range at the academy, grass and covered bays, lit for night practice, open since autumn 2025.

The clubhouse table

The Society is the resort's all day restaurant, run as a hotel table rather than a members room.

What the internet says

Most public review history sits under the old Almenara name. The Leadingcourses listing scores 8.2 from 189 reviews (read 2026). The Albrecht Golf Guide holds an older 3.6 of 5 from 40 reviews. Golfmagic's 2025 review of the relaunch gave 4 of 5 and called it good value beside its famous neighbours. Players praise the condition, views and quiet. Older reviews warn about poor signage between holes and thin on-course services; newer ones note prices rising after the rebrand.

The course and the greens

Golf writers who played after the 2025 redesign report fresh, well kept fairways and quick, sloping greens that are a joy to putt on. The critical reviews mostly date from the old Almenara years, before the redesign.

Arrival and the welcome

Writers describe a calm, well organised arrival at the new resort. TripAdvisor reviews are mixed, with friendly clubhouse staff in most reports but a cooler welcome in a few.
