I recently started playing golf and quickly paused due to needing cataract surgery and not seeing the ball. Full disclosure, I’m no Tiger Woods yet. But even as a beginner, it quickly became clear why golf is such an essential part of life on the Costa del Sol. Golf here isn’t just a sport, it’s a social scene, a networking tool, and a lifestyle. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, knowing the ins and outs can truly enrich your experience.
One surprise I had was the variety of golf available, ranging from ultra exclusive to casually affordable. While prestigious courses like Valderrama famously charge €600 a round plus a compulsory forecaddie, plenty of enjoyable courses can be played for as little as €40 to €60.
Here’s what I’ve learned that can help you navigate Costa del Sol’s vibrant golf scene.
Memberships vs Green Fees. Finding Your Fit
Becoming a member isn’t mandatory. Some exclusive courses are strictly members only or invite only, but most offer pay as you go green fees. Membership can make sense if you find your ideal club and want the community, exclusivity, and convenience that comes with it.
My stepfather joined Aloha Golf Club and he absolutely loves it. But every club offers something unique. Take your time, play different courses, and only then consider membership.
Without naming names, some very exclusive golf courses lack tournaments or member participation. One even thought it would be a good idea to save money by firing the greenskeeper and letting the gardeners take over. Which, for anyone even slightly serious about golf, is a no.
New and Exclusive Courses to Keep an Eye On
Costa del Sol’s golf landscape is always evolving. Two projects worth watching:
La Zagaleta’s New Course
Inside Spain’s most exclusive gated community, La Zagaleta is adding a brand new private course. It promises luxury, privacy, and high end design.
Real de La Quinta’s New Course
Another highly anticipated project. It features panoramic views and a modern 9 hole layout. Still early days, but it’s drawing attention.
Spotlight. La Cala Golf Resort
La Cala Golf resort in Mijas is Spain’s largest golf complex with three full courses, a hotel, spa, and academy. Well run, scenic, and popular year round, it’s a must play whether you’re local or visiting.
Los Naranjos Golf Club. Popular with International Families
Located in Nueva Andalucía, Los Naranjos Golf is especially popular among Scandinavian families. It has a social, welcoming vibe, top tier maintenance, and an excellent clubhouse.
Calanova Golf Club. Home of the Biggest Pro Shop
Set in Mijas near La Cala town, Calanova’s course is fun and playable. The star, though, is the two story pro shop, by far the largest on the coast. If you like golf gear, good luck walking out empty handed.
Torrequebrada Golf
Located near Benalmádena, Torrequebrada golf is one of the older courses and definitely interesting… Scenic and challenging, with tight fairways and sea views. Mature trees, rolling terrain, and a traditional layout make it a rewarding round.
Río Real Golf
Just outside Marbella, Río Real is a beautiful riverside course known for its walkability and peaceful setting. It’s not the most high profile course, but it gets regular praise for being friendly, consistent, and low stress.

Networking
Golf is one of the easiest ways to meet people here. Many clubs organize events, tournaments, and dinners.
Booking Ahead
Spring and autumn are busy. Booking early secures tee times and usually gets you better prices.
Exclusive Access
Clubs like Valderrama or Zagaleta aren’t open to just anyone. Some require invites or connections. I’ve helped clients get access. It’s doable if you know who to speak to.
