Club El Candado is a private sports club in El Palo, on the east edge of Málaga city, with tennis, padel, sailing, rowing and a pool as well as golf. The nine-hole course, designed by Carlos Fernández Caleya, opened in 1968, which makes it one of the oldest on the coast. It is a par 33 of about 2,300 metres, built into a small valley: short, steep in places, with small, sloping greens that decide every score. The holes sit close together and some run tight against the practice ground and an internal road, so keep your eyes open. Visitors can play every day with a booking and a handicap certificate. The club does not publish a visitor price list online; players have reported nine-hole fees of roughly 20 to 38 euros in recent years, so ask when booking. There is a floodlit practice tee and an active junior school. It suits city-based golfers, learners and curious visitors, not players who want resort space around them.
The club's own 2026 sheet: 48 euros for 18 holes and 37.50 for 9, all year; from 12:00 to 15:00, and at weekends after 15:00, it drops to 37.50 and 23.50. Under 18s pay half, club hire is 17, a card of 10 rounds 252.60.
El Candado is a members' sports club with a golf section, so you pay the club's monthly fee plus a yearly golf fee. A new member pays 114.69 euros a month single or 161.08 a family, 13 payments a year, so about 1,490 and 2,090; under 30s pay 57.78 a month. Golf on top is 734.72 a year single, 1,226.34 a family and 433.66 for under 30s, so a single golfer's first year is about 2,230 (verified with the club, Sep 2026).
A floodlit practice tee.
The clubhouse restaurant is in the Michelin Guide and runs as a public restaurant in its own right.
What the internet says
Reviews are few and mixed. On Leadingcourses it scores 6.3 from 23 reviews (read 2026); value for money, at 7.1, and hospitality, at 7.8, score above the course itself, at 6.0. Hole19 golfers rate it 4.3. Golfshake lists the club without a single review. Players enjoy the cheap, friendly, old-style nine, the tricky 4th, and the clubhouse restaurant. The warnings are blunt: holes cross close to each other and to the range, balls can fly over paths, and maintenance is a level below the coast's norm.
The course and the greens
Golfers describe a short, hilly nine hole course with small greens. Reviews say the greens are okay rather than special, and the fairways are simple.
Arrival and the welcome
Visitors call the people at the club very friendly and helpful. The restaurant staff also get strong praise in reviews.
