🛰️ The course from the sky

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande opened in 1964. It was Robert Trent Jones Sr's first course in Europe, and he named it one of his five favourite designs. The club sits at sea level, about 150 metres from the beach, between the Guadiaro river and the marina. It is a classic parkland course, par 72 and 6,492 metres from the back tees. Cork oaks, pines, eucalyptus and palms line the fairways. Water comes into play late in the round, including at the par-3 17th. The raised, fast greens, guarded by 69 bunkers, decide most scores. Roger Rulewich and David Fleury rebuilt the whole course between 2015 and 2017, with new greens and modern drainage. The DP World Tour's Andalucía Masters was played here in 2023 and 2024. It is a private club. Visitors play on weekdays only, in a late-morning window; weekends are closed to outside play. Bring a handicap certificate: limits are 24 for men and 30 for women. The weekday green fee is about 385 euros (2026).

What the internet says

On Leadingcourses it scores 8.8 from 72 reviews (read 2026). Top100GolfCourses ranks it 2nd in Spain and 10th in continental Europe, and user reviews there sit at the top of the scale. Reviewers praise the greens above all, plus the calm, classic layout and the clubhouse food. The negative theme is value and welcome: several reviewers write that visitors are made to feel like paying guests, and that nearby courses give more for the money.

The course and the greens

Reviews split on the greens. Some visitors found them slow and hard to read, while others say they are quick and true. Most agree the rest of the course is kept in very good shape.

Arrival and the welcome

Most reviewers felt well looked after, with staff taking clubs from the car park and friendly starters. A few visitors found the club formal and less warm than its neighbours.
