The European Tour's qualifying school finals lived here fifteen straight years, 1993 to 2007. Spanish Open 2005. Rebuilt and reopened 2021.

The Old Course at The San Roque Club opened in 1990 on a large estate under the Sierra Bermeja, between Sotogrande and Gibraltar. The club credits Dave Thomas as designer, with bunkers later reworked by Seve Ballesteros; some guides also name Tony Jacklin. The European Tour's Qualifying School finals were decided here from 1993 to 2007, and the Spanish Open came in 2005. The course closed at the end of 2019 for a full rebuild and reopened in June 2021 with new bent-grass greens, Bermuda fairways, and the two nines swapped. One nine runs through old cork oak woods and demands straight driving; the other is more open, with ravines and water. The club lists it at par 72 and 6,311 metres. Members come first: visitors book public tee-time windows, show a handicap certificate (limits 28 for men, 36 for women), and follow a strict dress code. In 2026 a round costs about 250 to 300 euros by season, buggy not included.
A buggy is 50 euros.
Joining fee 60,000 euros then 4,013 a year (8,026 a couple) for unlimited golf on the Old Course, or 110,000 once with no annual fee. Six month membership 45,000 plus 3,439 a year, four month 40,000 plus 2,730. Members' guests pay 120 and members get guaranteed tee times (verified with the club, Sep 2026).
A two tier, part covered range with Toptracer for every visiting golfer, plus putting greens, pitching and bunkers.
The clubhouse restaurant keeps a members club feel, but visitors report paying and eating there without trouble.
What the internet says
On Golfshake the Old Course holds 4.8 from 23 reviews with 100 percent happy to return, though most predate or closely follow the 2021 rebuild. The club's combined Leadingcourses listing scores 8.1 from 186 reviews (read 2026); recent comments there say the renovation lifted the course to a new level, with fast greens. Top100GolfCourses ranks it 19th in Spain. The consistent warning is cost: even enthusiastic reviewers write that 250 euros and up, buggy extra, is a lot.
The course and the greens
Reviewers say the rebuilt greens are fast, true and among the best in the area. Visitors also found the course in good condition even after wet winters.
Arrival and the welcome
TripAdvisor visitors mention a warm greeting from the caddie master team, plus free range balls and water. A rare review found the starter less friendly, but most felt very well received.
