If you live here full time you already know. Summers are easy, you barely need a towel before diving in. Come November, the pool looks just as inviting, but that first step is brutal. This is why so many of my buyers and friends ask me about heated outdoor pools. The funny part is there are far fewer outdoor public heated pools on the Costa del Sol than people think. In private urbanisations, it is usually a debate between residents. The cost is not the real issue, it does not increase the monthly too much in larger urbanizations, it is the fact that half the neighbours are away until spring and do not want to pay for something they never use. Communities with more year round residents tend to make it work. Indoor heated pools are easier, and you find them in most higher end new build projects, some public gyms, clubhouses and hotels across the coast. Let’s go area by area.
Marbella and Golden Mile
Marbella has the most variety. Hotels are the safest bet for a proper indoor heated pool. The Marbella Club is reliable all year and the outdoor Seagrill pool at Puente Romano is heated and open, which is rare on the coast. Six Senses Spa is already established inside Puente Romano, a more intimate space compared to some of the larger wellness setups on the coast.
Urbanisations in Marbella come in two types. Back in the day, some were designed from the start with indoor heated pools and spa areas while others were never meant for winter swimming at all. You also find a few communities where the residents have agreed to heat the outdoor pool through the colder months, usually because many of them live here full time and want to use it. Where most owners are only around in summer the vote almost always goes the other way.
At the very top end, most modern projects like Epic by Fendi have serious pool facilities. They include indoor pools that are built for year round use and outdoor pools that look incredible but are not heated.
Private villas in Sierra Blanca and Cascada de Camoján often decide to have heated pools built in as standard.
For gyms San Pedro is worth pointing out. Supera Gym has a proper indoor heated pool. For many residents this is the easiest solution if their community pool is just decoration once November arrives.
Estepona and New Golden Mile
Estepona is fast becoming the capital of heated pools on the coast, especially in new builds. Emare stands out with an outdoor heated pool that is designed to be used all year. Velaya also offers a heated outdoor pool and it is one of the few communities where you can swim outside in January without freezing.
A rare find, the Free Wave Sports Center in Cancelada is actually an outdoor heated lap pool open year round.
Hotels are straightforward. The H10 Estepona Palace offers spa access with a heated pool. Las Dunas Grand Luxury Hotel offers a pricy spa worth the money, Ikos hotel is another great option, and on the new golden mile and Exe Estepona Thalasso in Cancelada has an indoor spa pool and treatments, and most of these hotels allow public access with a day pass. Simply google spa hotel near you for your nearest.
Metrovacesa’s projects in Cancelada add another layer. The clubhouse at Santa Vista has a small heated indoor pool, sauna and even a bastu, which always surprises Scandinavian buyers.
Benahavís and Surroundings
Benahavís leans more towards indoor pools with full spa facilities. Capanes del Golf has an indoor heated pool alongside its outdoor ones. Upper end projects like The View, The Sky, Real de la Quinta and others include a heated indoor pool and wellness facilities, which is exactly what buyers moving in full time are looking for.
In gated golf communities like Los Arqueros or La Quinta, it is more common to find small indoor spa pools as part of the clubhouse rather than in every urbanisation. Villas in La Zagaleta and El Madroñal almost always feature private heated pools, sometimes both indoor and outdoor.
Hotels nearby keep standards high. Anantara Villa Padierna has a Roman style spa with a heated indoor pool for a quick winter swim. It is one of the nicest setups in the area. On the horizon, the Banyan Tree Angsana Spa hotel coming in 2030 will set a new benchmark.
Mijas, Fuengirola and La Cala
Here you find a mix of gym memberships and residential facilities. Higuerón Resort is the clear winner. It has two indoor heated pools, a spa, and is one of the few places where you can keep a swimming routine all year without thinking twice.
La Cala’s municipal pool is covered and heated, serving locals year round. Several new builds include indoor pools as part of wellness facilities, but outdoor heated options are still rare. Add that the David Meca indoor pool in Fuengirola is a proper fifty meter heated pool and one of the best for lap swimmers. Worth mentioning that some family oriented resorts in Riviera and Calahonda market heated pools but usually mean covered indoor splash pools rather than outdoor.
Benalmádena and Torremolinos
Benalmádena has some hotel options. Up in Arroyo de la Miel, there are hotels with indoor heated pools and spa packages open to the public if you pay. Arroyo de la Miel has several mid range hotels with indoor heated pools that locals can access with spa packages. It makes the area more practical for winter weekends. The Palacio de Deportes also has a climatized indoor pool.
Torremolinos is known for its Virgen del Carmen aquatic complex, a proper sports centre with indoor heated pools. It is one of the main training hubs on the coast and a place where you can guarantee warm water in January. Torremolinos is where serious swimmers and clubs train in winter, which gives more weight to the Virgen del Carmen mention.
Málaga City
Málaga city has the largest municipal offer. Inacua has Olympic size indoor heated pools used by clubs and the public. Several gyms in the city also have heated pools as part of their memberships. Besides Inacua, smaller gyms across the city like Go Fit or O2 Centro Wellness include heated pools in their memberships, which gives locals easy daily access without needing a spa hotel.
For something more luxurious, Gran Hotel Miramar has a spa pool that is heated and open to day guests with packages.
Sotogrande and San Roque
At the other end of the coast, Sotogrande continues the tradition of club living. SO Sotogrande has a spa with an indoor heated pool. The newly opened Fairmont brings a few of their own. La Reserva offers members access to pools that are sometimes heated depending on the season. Villas here almost always have heated pools included.
The Santa María Polo Club often partners with hotels and wellness centres, so residents end up with private access deals to heated pools even outside their villas.
Final Word
Heated pools in Costa del Sol are not everywhere, but once you know where to look you realise there are plenty of ways to swim all year. It could be joining a gym like Supera San Pedro, booking a spa day at Exe Estepona or H10, or finding a community where heating is built in or voted through. For villas, it is simply part of the lifestyle.
